Taxis: Avoid using unofficial taxis – 'taxi piratas' - as several violent incidents involving tourists have been reported. Only take official taxis. Official taxis are red with a triangular sticker and plastic box on the roof with the name and number of the taxi company. Where possible use radio-dispatched taxis. When getting into a taxi, ensure that the driver's identification number, name and photograph are clearly visible on the dashboard, and ensure that the driver indicates the meter. At the airport in San Jose, hotels recommend Taxi Aeropuerto (also known as Taxis Unidos), which are the official taxis of Juan Santamaria International Airport. The taxis are orange colored with the company’s logo painted white on the door. Reservations can be made at www.taxiaeropuerto.com, although the taxis are widely available at the Airport. To book upon arrival, turn left after claiming baggage and exiting the terminal, and you should see the clearly identified window where fare is prepaid.
Casino games: In Costa Rica some casino table games have different names, others have different names and different rules. Roulette in Costa Rica casinos is called 'Canasta' and is played with a double-zero layout. However, instead of using a roulette wheel the winning number is selected from a circular wire cage with numbered balls similar to the one used in bingo halls.
Casinos: New gaming laws were passed in April 2008 limiting the opening hours of casinos in Costa Rica to between 6pm and 2am. Many casinos in Costa Rica offer free alcohol to their customers and this must also come to a stop as well as restricting access for minors. Casinos that plan to be built from new since these law changes will have to be at least a 3 star resort with 60 rooms that offer complete services. The casino floor space also must not more than 15 % of the hotel's total floor space and cannot be accessible directly from the street.
